The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) on Saturday presented four young men in Baidoa who voluntarily surrendered after previously being members of the Al-Shabaab militant group.
The defectors said they had been part of factions known within the group as “Jabhads.” They cited the harsh conditions in the bush, constant clashes with Somali National Forces, and sustained airstrikes as key reasons for abandoning the group.
According to their statements, life in Al-Shabaab-controlled areas had become increasingly difficult, prompting their decision to lay down arms.
NISA officials said the surrender reflects ongoing efforts to encourage defections and weaken insurgent networks across Southwest Somalia.
Federal government officials confirmed the men will be taken to rehabilitation centers, where they will undergo reintegration programs before rejoining their communities and resuming their education.
