Egypt Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Security and Stability

Egypt has reiterated its strong support for Somalia’s security and stability, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening strategic ties with Mogadishu.

In a recent statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry praised Somalia’s efforts to enforce law and combat terrorism and confirmed Egypt’s participation in the new African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Egypt’s involvement in AUSSOM—established under a UN Security Council resolution in December 2023—is aimed at helping Somalia defeat Al-Shabaab and assume full responsibility for its security. The first contingent of Egyptian troops is expected to arrive in Somalia soon.

The two nations elevated their ties to a Strategic Partnership following Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo in January 2024.

Egypt and Somalia also signed a military cooperation protocol in August, with Egypt sending military aid the following month.

Egypt emphasized its intention to deepen strategic, economic, and cultural relations with Somalia for mutual benefit and regional stability.
