A suicide bomber detonated himself inside a military training facility in Somalia’s capital on Monday killing several people and wounding scores, according to police and military officials.
“A suicide bomber disguised as a member of the military managed to enter inside the training camp… several soldiers were killed and others wounded but we have not established the exact number so far,” Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Abdirahman told AFP.
The casualties are reported to be all soldiers.
Al-Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility for the attack through pro-Shabaab media outlets. The group claims to have killed 24 people in the attack but government sources say the death toll is at least 10.
Militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab is expected to be behind the string of recent blasts targeting government and civilian installations.
The suicide bomb attack comes a mere hours after a government worker was killed after a bomb was planted on his vehicle. Yesterday, Al-Shabaab militants killed at least 15 people after a car bomb intended for the newly appointed military chief hit a minibus carrying civilians.
The Somali President declared the country in a state of war last week and vowed to bring the fight to Al-Shabaab militants. Donning military fatigues, he offered the militant insurgency group an ultimatum; disarm and surrender to the police within 60 days and they will receive full amnesty, or “face the consequences.”
